Llano County, Texas

Llano County (pronounced ) is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 17,044. Its county seat is Llano6, and the county is named for the Llano River.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,502 km² (966 mi²). 2,421 km² (935 sq. mi.) of it is land and 81 km² (31 sq. mi.) of it is water. The total area is 3.25% water.

Enchanted Rock, a designated state natural area and popular tourist destination, is located in southern Llano county.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,044 people, 7,879 households, and 5,365 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (18/mi²). There are 11,829 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.27% White, 0.30% Black or African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.77% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 5.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,879 households out of which 16.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 5.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.90% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.56.

In the county, the population is spread out with 15.90% under the age of 18, 4.50% from 18 to 24, 18.40% from 25 to 44, 30.50% from 45 to 64, and 30.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 53 years. For every 100 females there are 94.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,830, and the median income for a family is $40,597. Males have a median income of $30,839 versus $21,126 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,547. 10.30% of the population and 7.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.20% of those under the age of 18 and 6.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
