According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,045 km² (403 mi²). 1,038 km² (401 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.64% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 10,304 people, 3,574 households, and 2,676 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 4,232 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 68.41% White, 24.25% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.25% Pacific Islander, 3.91% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. 8.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,574 households out of which 45.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 14.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 19.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
