Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital city of Zambia. It is located in south central Zambia on a plateau at 4200 feet (1 400 m) in altitude. Population 1,640,000 (2000)

Lusaka was founded in 1905 by European settlers, at the site of a village named after the village headman Lusaaka. Due to its central location in the country, in 1935 it replaced Livingstone as the capital of the British colony Northern Rhodesia. In 1964 it became the capital of the newly independent Zambia.

On March 1, 1999 four bombs detonated in Lusaka, one of which destroyed the Angolan Embassy.
