The Manhattan School of Music is a music school that offers bachelors, masters, and doctorate degrees in classical and jazz performance and composition. The school is located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City, adjacent to the campus of Columbia University, where it has been since 1969.
The school was founded in 1917. As of 2004, it has approximately 275 faculty members and 800 students from about 40 different countries. About 25 percent are from New York, and another 15 percent are from other parts of the United States. Many of the students live in the school's residence hall. In addition to training musicians at the highest level for professional careers, the school offers precollege preparatory programs.
