Mary Jane Gething

'Mary-Jane Gething' gained a Bsc and a Phd in the department of Biochemistry at the Universtiy of Melbourne. She then spent 20 years carrying out research in protein chemistry and molecular biology at Cambridge and London, England and New York and Dallas, USA where she gained valuable research experience. In 1998 she returned to Melbourne and was appointed professer of biochemistry and molecular biology at the [Unversity of Melbourne]. There are many examples of Gething's importance in the field of biochemistry. She has done extensive work on the endoplasmic reticulum chaperones BiP her research papers include "Role and regulation of the ER chaperone BiP" "Role and regulation of the ER chaperone Bip binding sequences in antibodies" and "BiP binding sequences in HIV gp160". Gethings work is very important as BiP is involved in many different processes in the cell: it binds newly synthesised protiens and maintains them in a stable state. It also an essential component of translocation machinery as well as plying an esssental role in retrograde transport of proteins across the cell to the proteosome. Due to her work this very important protein is now well understood. Mary-Jane Gething has also published two books "Protein transport and secretion" was published in 1985 "Guidebok to molecular chaperones and protien folding catalysts" 1997 which describes important aspects of strusture function and regulation of all known chaperones and enzymes involved in protein folding. It is is described as an excellent handbook with up to date information proving that Mary-Jane Gething is a scientist of great worth and knowledge.
