Reagan Youth

Reagan Youth was a band started by singer Dave Rubinstein (Dave Insurgent) and his friend and guitarist Paul Bakija in Queens in the early 1980s. They have been labeled peace punk as well as hardcore and released 2 LPs (Volumes I & II) before disbanding in the late '80s, when Ronald Reagan left office. Both are available on a single CD called "A Collection of Pop Classics" on New Red Archives . Known for their use of Klu Klux Klan and Nazi Party imagery, the band expressed its political views through ironically donning actual uniforms from the two hate groups and writing songs like "Jesus Was a Communist," an interesting stab at the Christian fundamentalists in the United States, and "New Aryans," an anti-Ronald Reagan/yuppie and also anti-racist anthem. Dave became heavily involved in heroin and became a dealer. He was beat up by another dealer to whom he owed money. After a brief hospitalization, he returned to his parents home. He soon moved to the lower East Side to better continue his drug habit. He acquired a girlfriend who supported both their drug habits by turning tricks. One day, his father accidentally ran over his mother, killing her. Soon after, his girlfriend was picked up by a John who turned out to be a notorious serial killer. After learning of her death, Dave spiralled deeper into his addiction and killed himself.
