Russia national rugby league team

Rugby league was first played in Russia in the early 1990’s. Several clubs and team switched from rugby union, allegedly after watching a single match of rugby league on BBC television. The national team, known as the Bears, was formed soon after, and played its first fixtures against two British club sides: York and Fulham.

The Bears have since gone on to play in the European Nations Cup; since 2000 they have also competed in the World Cup, having previously played in the Emerging Nations Tournament. Russia is also the host for an international tournament known as the Victory Cup .

Although the game has only been played for less than 15 years in Russia the domestic competition is well funded and crowds are good.
