This was the motto of the Century of Progress, a world's fair held in Chicago in 1933-1934. The last part of the motto, "Man Conforms," now seems repressive. But it in fact comes from the work of the social scientists of the University of Chicago prior to the fair. As Chicago had a tremendous increase in population, much of which came from the farmlands surrounding it, the sociologists were motivated to study how rural people acquired the social skills to live in the city. They called this process "learning to conform."
