Shimoda, Shizuoka


Shimoda (下田市; -shi) is a city and port in Shizuoka, Japan.

In 2003 the city had an estimated population of 27,256 and a population density of 260.40 persons per km². The total area is 104.67 km².

The port was opened to American trade under the conditions of the Treaty of Kanagawa, negotiated by Commodore Matthew Perry, March 31 1854.

The city was founded on January 1 1971.
