Sitting Pretty

Sitting Pretty is a 1948 comedy film which tells the story of a family who hires a man with a mysterious past to babysit their children. It stars Robert Young, Maureen O'Hara and Clifton Webb.

The movie was adapted by F. Hugh Herbert from the novel by Gwen Davenport . It was directed by Walter Lang.

It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor (Clifton Webb).

The character of Lynn Belvedere, originated by Clifton Webb, appeared in two more movies:

  • Mr. Belvedere Goes to College (1949)
  • Mr. Belvedere Rings the Bell (1951)

A television series, Mr. Belvedere, starring Christopher Hewett, appeared in 1985.


Sitting Pretty is also a 1933 musical comedy film telling the story of two aspiring, but untalented, song-writers, played by Jack Oakie and Jack Haley. They are joined by Ginger Rogers on their trip from New York to Hollywood to find their fortune. This film was directed by Harry Joe Brown and featured Pickens Sisters trio as themselves.
