Slurpee

A Slurpee is a partially frozen beverage that comes in various fruit and soda flavors. It is sold and marketed by and is a registered trademark of the 7-Eleven corporation. 7-Eleven was originally an American corporation, though having been bought by a Japanese company, Slurpees are now sold around the world.

In a Slurpee, finely crushed ice and a flavored sugar syrup are kept partially frozen by being constantly mixed in a rolling tumbler. A dispenser knob is available at the front of the tumbler/freezer, where the patron pours their own Slurpee. Common flavors are frozen coke and cherry, but new flavors are introduced regularly. Slurpees are particularly popular on hot days, and July 11, or 7-11 on a calendar, is a very common day to go get slurpees. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada holds the record for annual Slurpee consumption, followed by Calgary and Detroit.

Similar drinks are sold under different names in other countries, such as Slush puppie in the UK and parts of Canada and Granizado in Spanish-speaking countries.

In popular culture

Slurpees are often referred to in pop culture references.

  • In The Simpsons television series, Apu sells Squishees which have been the basis for many sub-plots.

Kosher

Slurpees are generally considered kosher parve. The Diet Pepsi flavor uses sodium caseinate as an anti-freezing agent (sugar is a natural anti-freeze in other flavors) which only gives it the status of kosher dairy.
