Soviet submarine Red October

Красный Октябрь, a fictitious Project 941 Typhoon-class submarine, is the "title character" in the novel The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy and the movie based on that story. She is equipped with a revolutionary stealth propulsion system called the "caterpillar drive". In the story, Red October is the seventh Typhoon; in reality the seventh Typhoon officially was cancelled before commissioning. The story centered around a plot by a Soviet submarine captain to defect.

None of the real Typhoon class submarines was officially assigned the name Red October.
