Spa Road station was the original terminus of London's first railway, the London and Greenwich Railway , and opened on 8th February 1836, with the other end of the line terminating at Deptford. The extension to London Bridge opened on 14th December 1836, while the extension from Deptford to Greenwich didn't open until 12th April 1840. The station was re-sited in 1842, and renamed Spa Road & Bermondsey in October 1877.

The station was closed on March 15th 1915, by which time the railway it served was know as the South Eastern and Chatham Railway.

The old platforms can still be seen from trains passing between Deptford / New Cross & London Bridge.
