Spink County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 7,454. Its county seat is Redfield6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,911 km² (1,510 mi²). 3,895 km² (1,504 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,454 people, 2,847 households, and 1,933 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 3,352 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.56% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 1.48% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,847 households out of which 30.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 6.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.10% are non-families. 29.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.60% under the age of 18, 6.70% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 22.60% from 45 to 64, and 18.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 107.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.20 males.
