Outside the fields of religion and spirituality, the term spirit may mean:
- Alcohol, or a distilled alcoholic beverage (not wine or beer)
- In medicine, it formerly meant an alcoholic solution of a volatile drug; see tincture.

- Intent - "The spirit of the law, and not the letter."

- Esprit de corps - the commonality of purpose, devotion, and honor among members of a group
- A classical element -- also known as aether, akasha or quintessence -- representing the fifth element (the other four being earth, air, fire and water)
