A split-level house is a house in which one half of the house is one story, and the other half of the house is two stories. These were very popular is certain areas in the 1950's and 1960's. The one story section typically contains a family room (also known as a living room), dining room, and kitchen. There are two small sets of stairs that attach the one story section of the house to the two story section. One set leads up, typically to bedrooms and a bathroom. The other set leads down to a large family room and basement area.

Split-level houses are particularly well suited to sloped lots. The one story portion of the house rests on the higher part of the lot, and the two story portion of the house rests on the lower part of the lot. This provides a very efficient use of space.
