Stardome Observatory

Stardome Observatory is a public outreach facility in the heart of New Zealand's largest city, Auckland. No longer viable as an observational observatory due to increasing light pollution, it is dedicated primarily to educating the public (and school groups in particular) about astronomy and related topics. The Stardome Observatory incorporates a modern Zeiss planetarium, as well as the 50s-era Zeiss-built 500mm (16.5") Edith Winstone Blackwell classical Cassegrain telescope, and the 427mm (14") Nustrini Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. These two instruments are used mainly for display and public viewing, although some limited low-level research is being attempted with the Nustrini SCT. The Stardome Observatory is also home to the Auckland Astronomical Society.
