Statue of José Artigas

A statue of José Gervasio Artigas stands in Washington, DC on Constitution Avenue and 18th Street.

José Artigas was a 19th century general, sometimes called "the father of Uruguayan independence".

The Washington, DC statue was created in 1950 by Juan M. Blanes . At its base, the words "Liberty of America is my dream and its attainment my only hope" are engraved. The statue was mostly funded by Uruguayan school children.

This statue appears to be quite similar to a statue built in 1949 in Montevideo, Uruguay

There is also a statue of José Artigas in the city center of Montevideo, Minnesota.
