Steak pie is one of the traditional dishes served in Scotland, normally with a large serving of "Steak Chips " (cooked in steak oil). For those living in Edinburgh, this dish can be garnished with a hearty dollop of "Chippie Sauce " (a recipe unique to each take away, consisting of Brown sauce and vinegar in varying proportion). In other parts of Scotland, it is only available with the regular "Salt 'n Vinegar" rather than "Salt 'n Soss", and as a result most people travel to Edinburgh to sample the enhanced dining experience of having their Steak Pie with Chippie Sauce.
Available in many varieties, most notably the Deep Fried or Home made versions prevail. The former consists normally of a greasy lump with no great taste and limp pastry, however the latter is a perfect combination of juicy steak chunks embedded in a crispy and flakey pastry jacket and an elegant taste.
Other types of steak pie are available around the world, and even England has had the idea to invent other varieties of steak pie, which are not available from the historic Scottish Chip Shop. These versions of the pie are considered blasphemous by anyone living in Scotland, and a one man campaign known in short as Steak pies are for chip shops NOT farmers has been set up to bring about the downfall of these unauthorised copies, and as the one man campaign consists of this writer, no more shall be said about these unholy heresies.
