Stechelberg

Stechelberg is a village in Bernese Oberland,a valley inward behind Lauterbrunnen. The village is connected with a cable car after Gimmelwald, Muerren and at Schilthorn, at foot after Trachsellauenen and over the weather gap in the Wallis.

In the rear of the valley one meets iron ore with Trachsellauenen and the ruins of an ore smelting plant, here was diminished and smelted. The forests cleared at that time were again deforested, so that this protected area (Naturschutzgebiet ) in the best condition presents from deforestation.

On February 6, 2003 two avalanches fell into the village. The inhabitants had met however in time all necessary precautionary measures, so that the damage was limited to some broken windowpanes. The school was closed for some days, and the villagers were forced to live on stockpiled supplies, because they could not leave the houses.
