Steenwijkerland (before 2003 called Steenwijk) is a municipality in the eastern Netherlands.

Steenwijk

Steenwijk is the largest town of the municipality. Steenwijk received city rights in 1327.

Blokzijl

Blokzijl is a small city located southwest of Steenwijk. It received city rights in 1672.

Giethoorn

Giethoorn is known in the Netherlands as Venice of the North. In the old part of the village, there were no roads, and all transport was done by water over one of the many canals.

Vollenhove

Vollenhove is a town southwest of Steenwijk. Until the Noordoostpolder was drained, it was located on the coast of the IJsselmeer. It received city rights in 1354. Later Vollenhove was the main city in this region, that was formerly called Land van Vollenhove. Vollenhove was the summer residence of the bishop of Utrecht. That is why quite some nobility moved to Vollenhove. They build there havenzates in the town, which was unique. Therefore Vollenhove was called the city of palaces.
