Steven Isserlis

Steven Isserlis is one of the most prominent current British cellists. He was born in 1959. He is notable for his diverse repertoire and distinctive sound (achieved by the use of gut strings).

He plays both concertos and chamber music, and has rediscovered many previously neglected works. In addition to his performance work, he is Artistic Director of IMS Prussia Cove in Cornwall, where he undertakes master classes.

He has also organised a number of festivals with long-term collaborators such as Joshua Bell and Tabea Zimmermann .

He was awarded a CBE in 1998. He plays the Feuermann Stradivarius, on loan from The Nippon Music Foundation .
