The Stockport Air Disaster occurred at around 10am on Sunday the 4th of June, 1967.

A British Midland Argonaut, carrying passengers returning from Palma, Majorca, was on the approach to Ringway Airport (now Manchester International Airport) when its engines lost power due to pump failure.

The plane crashed into a garage, substation and patch of wasteland in Hopes Carr, in the centre of Stockport.

Twelve survivors were pulled from the wreckage before a fuel fire caught hold. 72 of the 84 passengers and crew were killed either by the impact or by the ensuing inferno.

In 2002 a plaque was unveiled at the scene of the accident, bearing the legend:
