The Gambia is divided into eight subdivisions or Local Government Areas:

• Banjul
• Basse
• Brikama
• Janjangbure
• Kanifeng
• Kerewan
• Kuntaur
• Mansakonko

Additionally, it has five divisions (capitals in parentheses):

• Lower River (Mansa Konko)
• Central River (Janjanbureh)
• North Bank (Kerewan )
• Upper River (Basse)
• Western (Brikama)

The national capital, Banjul, is classed as a city.
