Sylhet

Sylhet is a town in northeastern Bangladesh. It had a population of 285,308 in 2001, and has 10.49 square miles (27 km²) of area.

Sylhet is the chief town of Sylhet division. It was part of the Assam province during British Raj. After a referendum in 1947, Sylhet became a part of East Pakistan and later Bangladesh, whereas the rest of Assam became a part of India.

It is noted as the home town of most Bangladeshi migrants to the United Kingdom.

It is twinned with St Albans, United Kingdom
