University of Tabriz

(Redirected from Tabriz University)

The University of Tabriz is the second oldest university in Iran after University of Tehran and also the biggest academic institution in north-west of Iran. The university was first established by autonomous Democratic Republic of South Azerbaijan under Jafar Pishevari on June 12, 1946 under the former name of Azerbaycan Universiteti (University of Azerbaijan) with only three Faculties of Medicine, Agriculture and Pedagogy. University later closed by collapse of the autonomous government in November and was finally re-opened on October 30, 1947 – which is now officially set as inauguration date of the university. The university was called University of Azarabadegan prior to Islamic Revolution of 1979 and University of Tabriz afterwards.

Since August 2002, chancellor of University of Tabriz is Mohammad Reza Pourmohammadi .
