Trabzon is a province of Turkey on the Black Sea coast. Its adjacent provinces are Giresun to the west, Gumushane to the southwest, Bayburt to the southeast and Rize to the west. Its provincial capital is Trabzon city, and the traffic plate number is 61.
History
Trabzon was made part of Ottoman Empire by Mehmet the Conqueror in 1461. It was initially a sanjak then gained the status of eyalet and finally became a vilayet in 1868.
Subprovinces
Trabzon province has 17 subprovinces (in Turkish: İlçe), not counting the central subprovince which carries the province's name. Nine of these are along the 114 km coast line: (From West to East) Beşikdüzü, Vakfıkebir, Çarşıbaşı, Akçaabat, Yomra, Arsin, Araklı, Sürmene and Of. The remaining subprovinces are located in innerland: Tonya, Düzköy, Şalpazarı, Maçka, Köprübaşı, Dernekpazarı, Hayrat and Çaykara. Among these Beşikdüzü ve Şalpazarı gained subprovince status in 1988, and Çarşıbaşı, Düzköy, Köprübaşı, Dernekpazarı and Hayrat in 1990.
