Valaam

Valaam is an archipelago in the northern portion of Lake Ladoga, lying within the Russian Federation's Republic of Karelia. Its total area is 36 square km. Valaam is most notably the site of Valaam Monastery, but it is also known for its natural beauty. During the Second World War, it was captured by Finland but was returned to the USSR in 1944.
