Vienna U-Bahn

The Vienna U-Bahn is a rapid transit (Metro) system consisting of 5 lines mostly running underground, also that the U6 partly uses the track of the old Vienna Stadtbahn, and is therefore mostly overground. The network is interconnected with the S-Bahn system. All means of public transport also including trams, buses can be used with the same ticket. The stations are often named after streets or city areas, and in some special cases after prominent buildings at or near the station, although the official policy of the Wiener Linien states that they prefer not to name stations after buildings.

The lines do not have any specific names. They are just numbered, with a "U" (for U-Bahn) in front of the numbers. However, each line can be identified by a colour.

The line U5, to Hernals has not been built yet; plans for its construction have, however, repeatedly been drawn up and it's not entirely unlikely that by 2020, construction of the U5 will have started. It had already been planned for a similar route since the original plans, but was shelved several times throughout the past decades.
