The Volvo 940 is among the last in the long-running line of large rear wheel drive cars from the Swedish car maker. Introduced in the U.S. for the 1991 model year, the 940 series was essentially a cosmetic re-skinning of the 740 and 760 series cars. All drivetrains and most options had been available in the 740/760, with the exception of a 6 cylinder engine (which became available again in the 960 series to be introduced for 1992).

3 engines were available in the U.S. spec 940:

2.3 liter 8-valve Inline-4 Cylinder, 114hp ('92 940GL, '93-'95 940)

2.3 liter 16-valve Inline-4 Cylinder, 153hp ('91 940GLE)

2.3 liter 8-valve Inline-4 Cylinder Turbo, 162hp ('91-'93 940 Turbo, '94-'95 940 Level II)

(NOTE: Volvo moved to front wheel drive cars with the 440 and 850. The final rear wheel drive Volvo was the S90/960 discontinued in 1998.) In some non- U.S. markets, it featured a range of 2.0l diesel and 2.3l gas four-cylinder engines, with and without turbos.
